This thesis analyzes the different stylistic expression forms in the language of the photography which are used or could be used for manipulation in the non-verbal visual communication in the media. The object of the research are the photographic images, the subject – the deliberate psychological influence aiming an unconscious change in the behavior of the viewer of the visual message. In the thesis the mechanism of manipulation through the photography is researched as a process and its details are described. For a first time in Bulgaria, the different practical mechanisms for realization of the manipulative influence of an image as an element of the mass communication are summarized. The rich spectrum of manipulative photographic methods that are applied or could be applied for the purposes of the mass communication is described. The thesis analyses the mechanism of visual manipulation through “masking”of part of the truth. Another analyzed mechanism is that of spreading a lie in the visual communication through a picture. The thesis defines the camera as a vehicle for sharing and spreading of visual messages in the process of the mass communication. A personal definition of a manipulative image is presented. The thesis presents a comparative typology of the intentions of the visual message in the spheres of the disinformation, the propaganda, the PR and the advertising.
