The dissertation presents family relations in the Republic of Korea from the Joseon Kingdom to modern times, linking them to education and the Confucian tradition. Confucian norms are persistently embedded in the foundation of the contemporary Korean family, and to a large extent, still determine the relationships between its members. The clash of Confucian views with modern demands has led to several social problems in the country and exacerbated inequality and misunderstanding between the sexes. Education, on which Confucianism places a strong emphasis, is a major factor in family relations, roles, forms, and composition. The thesis traces and analyzes Confucian values as a conceptual framework for understanding Korean family processes, structures, relationships, and roles in both family and social contexts. The study also reveals the nature of the connection between the educational needs of the family and the relationships and choices of its members at family and individual levels.
