The dissertation presents in detail the life, works and main relationships of the church historian Jaroslav Jan Pelikan. The first part unfolds the family context of his upbringing, as well as a concise family biography, complementing the understanding of the special period in which he was shaped as a future researcher. Emphasis is placed on his diverse development and academic ambivalence, which later became decisive for his future steps and activities. Part Two, the most voluminous, focuses on his teaching at the University of Chicago, as well as Yale, where he spent most of his life. Particular attention is paid to his seminal work, which overturns the hitherto imposed paradigm of Adolf von Harnack. In addition, within the same part, previously unexplored archives are also presented, which further reveal the interpersonal relationships that built Pelikan as one of the best historians of the twentieth century. The third part outlines his acceptance into full sacramental communion with the Orthodox Church, as well as the main factors that contributed to this, which also reveals his entire life and works as a kind of path, not forward, but towards the home he has always known. |
