As its very title of the dissertation, the main topic of study trends and changes among the cities in southern Italy during the Norman power in the Apennines and Sicily. The original intent of this work, however, put us in front of a relatively new and poorly understood topic in the field of urban studies. Cause of difficulties encountered proved to be not only the limited number of studies, but the lack of specific sources for urban history of South Italy in the Middle Ages. This, of course, we should not be convinced that the preserved documents and narratives Southern Apennines and Sicily between eleventh and twelfth century are numerous. On the contrary - their numbers are significant, but the information in them is fragmentary and often marginalized. The cities of the Italian South can actually judge only indirectly, whats left - either by the small number of urban chronicles, numismatic monuments in various administrative documents (notarial documents, various royal and ecclesiastical degrees) narratives and last but not Finally, as this give us the archaeological excavations and research in cultural layers medieval villages - ceramics, rare glass, building material, and sometimes astonishing monuments of decorative and applied arts
