The dissertation examines the image of women in ads displayed in Bulgaria, with emphasis on the advertising images presented on 100 billboards and outdoor advertisements in the summer of 2017- 2018. They have been analyzed from a semiotic point of view, by looking at the extent to which the image of women in advertising is stereotyped and objectified, and to what extent- realistic. First, the various feminist waves and feminist movements are presented as their members have accomplished a lot in terms of women's position in society. It is discussed how the image of women in ads (and not only) has changed over the years in line with changes in society. Attention is also paid to the negative consequences of the idealized and unrealistic representations of women in advertising (eating disorders, violence, etc.). Since the ads in the thesis are analyzed from a semiotic point of view, the nature of the sign, its various interpretations and analytical approaches are also presented. Attention is paid to various classifications and studies in this field, which have been used in the analysis of the ads on the Bulgarian market. In the last chapter, 100 ad images are analyzed, and there are drawn and presented statistics and conclusions regarding the image of women in the ads in Bulgaria at the moment. |
